Description
The Women in Machine Learning & Data Science (WiMLDS) Meetup aims to inspire, educate, regardless of gender, and support women and gender minorities in the field. We are back for our 53rd edition ! All genders may attend our meetups. Agenda 18:50 - arrival Please be on time. To respect our speakers, the doors will close once the talks have started. --- 19:00 - Launch of the evening by Paris WiMLDS meetup team & EDF --- 19:15 - Online Convex Reinforcement Learning and Applications to Energy Management Problems, by Bianca Marin Moreno, PhD student in Applied Mathematics. Abstract: This presentation investigates online reinforcement learning algorithms for controlling large multi-agent systems in non-stationary environments with unknown dynamics. Our framework is motivated by a demand-side management problem of controlling a large number of thermal electrical appliances in real time so that their average consumption matches a target consumption profile to help balance energy supply and demand. Although motivated by the electricity sector, the proposed algorithms are general and applicable to many fields, such as logistics, economics and ecology. 19:45 - Exploring fairlearn and practical strategies for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems, by Tamara Atanasoska, open-source maintainer, a software engineer at :probabl and CompLing/NLP researcher Abstract : As AI becomes a more significant part of our everyday lives, ensuring these systems are fair is more important than ever. In this session, we’ll discuss how to define fairness and the potential harms our algorithms can have on people and society. We’ll introduce fairlearn, a community-driven, open-source project that offers practical tools for assessing and mitigating harm in AI systems. We’ll also explore how to discuss bias, different types of harm, the idea of group fairness and how they all relate to fairlearn’s toolkit. To make it all concrete, we’ll walk through a real-world example of assessing fairness and share some hands-on strategies you can use to mitigate harm in your own ML projects. 20:15 - Welcome to the Broligarchy, by Mathilde Saliou, Tech journalist and writer Abstract : Led by Donald Trump and a few tech billionaires such as Elon Musk, the United States has fallen into a new era, and could sweep part of the Western world in its wake. In this keynote, we'll try and grasp how we ended up here, and what it means for women and diversity within and outside the tech industry. --- 20:45 - Cocktail & Networking The cocktail is sponsored by EDF. --- After the meet-up, a summary be available on our Medium page : https://wimlds-paris.medium.com/ --- Code of Conduct WiMLDS is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone.
